ForwardTopic Support Group: Living in Limbo, Awaiting Permanency in Foster Care
The goal of foster care is to reunify the child with their original family, but the journey from placement to permanency can be long and winding. Sometimes it feels like you are all living in limbo between planning and permanency.
During this topic support group, you will talk through the different types of permanency, the emotional challenges of concurrent planning, and some of the ways you can support the child during the waiting. You will also have a chance to consider the supports you need. Lastly, you will create an action plan to help you navigate the unknowns.

Knowledge:
1. The participants will be able to name a unique aspect of permanency through foster care compared to other types of permanency.
2. The participants will be able to articulate the role of concurrent planning.
3. The participants will be able to cite one challenge and one opportunity concurrent planning affords the child/youth and family.
4. Participants will be able to articulate how each child/youth’s case plan may affect concurrent planning even within the same family.
Skills:
5. The participants will practice the language they will use with themselves, their extended network, and the child(ren) regarding concurrent planning and permanency.
6. Participants will identify at least two strategies they can use to create a sense of stability while waiting for permanency.

7. The participants will demonstrate an intention to consider both the immediate and long-term importance of the child/youth's family, community, and cultural connections.
8. The participants will demonstrate an intention to consider the child/youth’s long-term developmental, physical, and psychological needs when discussing permanency options.
