Supporting a Kinship-First Culture in a Workforce Environment

This course will use kin-first culture principles to help DCYF workers engaging with kinship and relative caregivers to prepare them for successful placements of youth.

The fundamental concepts, tools and frameworks used will be:
• Trauma-informed engagement skills
• Incorporating the lived experiences of both kinship caregivers and youth
• Tools, forms and processes that will help workers provide support throughout the life of a case
• Consideration of family dynamics, culture, age and implicit bias existing that are unique to a relative or kinship caregiver placement

DCYF Social Workers (case carrying)
DCYF Supervisors (case carrying)
Tribal Workers

Learning Objectives

Knowledge
K1: Identify and understand the ways that kinship placements can incorporate strengths of relative care connections for long-term success.
K2: Locate and understand the multiple sources of supports needed through the life of a case to care for both caregiver and youth.

Skills
S1: Anticipate the needs kinship caregivers will have in utilizing resources through DCYF and community to provide accessible solutions to potential barriers.
S2: Provide accurate and timely information to kinship placements on the benefits of becoming licensed, as well as on their ability to access training and support regardless of licensure status.

Values
V1: Identify the ways that implicit bias has impacted kinship placements and measures to reduce them.
V2: Identify ways that lived experiences of youth and caregivers must be prioritized to ensure safe, trauma-informed placements.
