Foundations of Practice Modules

The Foundations of Practice Modules are an in-person, one-day training that was developed by DCYF Program Managers to support the implementation of HB 1227 into practice for DCYF Field Case Workers. These modules were adapted by the Alliance to deepen new case worker knowledge following the completion of Regional Core Training beginning with the 6/16/2023 RCT Cohort.

There are 4 modules:
• Module 1: Removal Standards – Defining Imminent Physical Harm Using our Safety Framework
• Module 2: Harm of Removal
• Module 3: Kinship Caregivers - Identify, Locate, Inform and Evaluate
• Module 4: Preparing for Shelter Care

In Modules 1-3, you will focus on identifying and articulating the higher standards at Shelter Care using an assigned case. This instruction is focused on how you will utilize already existing tools to assess for and articulate when the need for out-of-home placement may exist, what the harm of removal is, and the attempts the department made to mitigate that harm and Kinship Placements. You will have the opportunity to consider all your new knowledge across several variables and conditions as you debrief your practice on assigned cases. Prior to the training, you will independently review the Garcia Family Discovery Packet. You are encouraged to set aside at least two hours to begin this preparation. In Module 4: Preparing for Shelter Care, you will work on written and verbal articulation for the need for out-of-home placement for Mary and Victor Garcia. This training will be offered as a two-day training series with the Shelter Care Simulation: Articulating and Defending the Need for Out of Home Placement. Learners will receive nine hours of training for the Foundation of Practice Modules and an additional three hours for the Shelter Care Simulation Training combined training series.

They will be scheduled in training:
• Day 1: 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.
• Day 2: Either an 8:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. start time: 3- to 3.5-hour simulation
