Afterhours Core 2.1 Physical Abuse: Critical Community Partners (eLearning)

This module orients participants to the definition of child physical abuse in Washington state, and provides a broad overview intended to help participants identify and appropriately respond to physical abuse.  Much of the direct instruction related to identifying physical abuse comes from video clips featuring two Washington State Child Protection Medical Consultants, Dr. Rebecca Wiester and Dr. Joyce Gilbert.  Policy and practical considerations for photographing injuries is also provided.  Scenarios are used to practice applying these guidelines related to photographic documentation, and to identifying injuries or patterns that are commonly related to child physical abuse.  The effective use of interpreters and other services to serve people who are not proficient in English is reviewed, and resources provided.  Throughout this module, emphasis is placed on the importance of collaboration with community partners, particularly medical professionals. 

Target Audience

Staff newly hired into afterhours, or those who have not been able to attend training specific to afterhours work in the past.
